Six Strings North of the Border Vol 1
Various Artists
VOL 1 CD BCD128

Six Strings North of the Border Vol 1From contemporary guitar wizardry to the more traditional stylings of celtic, blues, folk, and jazz musicians, Canada is fortunate to be home to some of the best acoustic guitar music being made today. Now Borealis is proud to present a new CD featuring some of the best of that music. Six Strings North of the Border showcases the incredible range and quality of Canada’s acoustic guitarists. Producer Bill Garrett has lovingly assembled fifteen cuts that range in style from celtic to bluegrass to ragtime to swing to modern guitar pyrotechnics and everything in between.

Beginning with Gordie Sampson’s compelling medley of Irish Jigs, “The Black Jigs,” the album takes you on a journey of beautiful guitar sounds that includes Bruce Cockburn’s classic “Foxglove,” Rick Whitelaw’s incredible swing tune “Bottom Dollar,” the Thomas Handy Trio’s innovative melding of western and Classical Indian music, J.P. Cormier’s masterful rendition of “The Mathematician/ Sleepy Maggie,” Don Ross’s string bending “3 Hands,” and Dave Clarke’s bluegrass instrumental “Katherine.” Ken Hamm and Doug Cox weigh in with an uptempo ragtimey tune featuring guitar and dobro, Stephen Fearing contributes his tribute to Martin Carthy, “Martin’s,” and Jean Hewson showcases her guitar talents on “Scotty MacMillan’s G Minor Jig.” As a special treat, fans of CBC Radio One will recognize Eve Goldberg’s “Watermelon Sorbet” as the theme to the national daily show “Richardson’s Roundup.” Other highlights include Jason
Fowler’s “Shi Big, Shi Mhor,” Bob Evans’ “That Infernal Optimist,” and David Essig’s meditative “Berkley Springs.” The album also includes one previously unreleased cut: Rick Fielding’s “Hesitation Rag,” his own unique version of “Hesitation Blues.”

Six Strings North of the Border will clearly be a “must have” for anyone who is a guitar music aficionado. It will also be a treasured album for those who simply enjoy the sound of beautiful instrumental music.

Designed by Michael Wrycraft, the album comes in a stunning package in a digipack format with informative liner notes and four colour design throughout. Six Strings North of The Border makes a wonderful gift for yourself, or for that special person on your gift list.
