Ellen's voice has been described as "fetching, wide-eyed" (Folk DJ) and "Janis Joplin singing Celtic
Zyedeco with a Klezmer twist" (Toronto Star) Ellen spent 14 years in Arctic communities where she formed Night
Sun in Iqaluit, Northwest Territories. Praised for the strength and beauty of her songwriting, Ellen recently won
first prize in the Ontario Council of Folk Festival's songwriting competition.
Chris Coleman
Clarinet, Mandolin, Tin Whistles, Irish Flute, Classical Guitar, Banjo, Backing Vocals
Chris is a multi-instrumentalist with a Master's degree in classical music performance from Chicago's Northwestern
University. Critics have remarked on his "fluid, Klezmer style" clarinet, and audiences are bowled over
by his virtuosity as he moves effortlessly between mandolin, banjo, flute, clarinet and whistles in a given set.
A seasoned performer, session musician, music teacher, Chalmer's Fund winner, and an engineer and producer, Chris
joined the band in Iqaluit after graduating from music school.
Les Casson
Drums, percussion, backing vocals
A writer, educator and self-described "accidental percussionist," Les anchors Night Sun's "superb
rhythm ensemble" (SOCAN review) with "an innate sense of rhythm that allows for an amazing depth of unusual
beats" (Greenman Review). Armed with a Master's degree in English and over half a life of percussion experience,
she can "get a rhythm out of anything that makes a noise" (Belleville Intelligencer) and proofread a
text in seconds flat. Sometimes simultaneously. Between Night Sun commitments, Les teaches writing at Queen's University.
She also freelances as a writer and editor.
Adam Hodge
Electric basses, backing vocals
Adam has been playing bass professionally for many years and brings to the band his experience in many styles of
music. A sensitive and gifted musician, Adam has been involved in several Kingston bands, including Hurricane Bob,
Shock Walter and The Marshall / Lawrance Blues Band. Adam has been living in Kingston, Ontario since he was ten.
When not playing with Night Sun, he's being a Dad, a Graphic Artist, and a Software Developer.
Scott Davey
Keyboards & backing vocals
Scott Davey has been living in Kingston and pursuing a variety of musical interests since 1997. Scott will release
his own CD, Blue Tear, this winter.
Besides writing and recording for his own projects, Scott is also writing songs for Kingston artists Len Whalen
and Obsidian and, in May 2004, had an original ballet performed at the Grand Theatre, in Kingston Ontario, by the
Kingston School of Dance.
